Resume : L'histoire commence au Japon en 1814, pendant la période d'Edo (l'actuelle Tokyo). O-Ei tient de son père son talent et son obstination. Elle peint très souvent à sa place, sans signer son travail, afin de boucler les commandes. D'autres figures d'artistes font leur apparition dans le manga, en particulier Ikeda ou Utagawa.
Le manga évoque aussi la relation entre O-Ei, Hokusai et la demi-soeur d'O-Ei, une petite fille aveugle de naissance.
Hokusai, meurt à 90 ans. O-Ei lui survit pendant neuf ans mais nul ne sait où elle est morte.
